Classic literature and online games are not usually associated with one another. However, the design team at Nexon has determined that its free-to-play MMOG Mabinogi and the tragedy Hamlet go hand in hand. The question is... Why?
Mabinogi Players of the online client game, Mabinogi Gold, can now expect a full literary experience with the coming update that was announced two days ago. The addition of Hamlet to the MMO is somewhat of a surprise because one does not normally pair literature and gaming. According to the design team, the introduction of Hamlet meshes quite well with the game actually.
Both Mabinogi Gold and Shakespeare's works, in this particular case Hamlet, have colorful stories, memorable characters and enough twists to keep your head spinning. As stated on their homepage: because Hamlet is world-renowned and the similarities between the two, it seemed only natural to bring them together.
Though this update is not simply an introduction of a famous story and a few characters. A new mission system is going to be unveiled in the update. These "Theater Missions" immerse the you into a play where you become an "actor" and must complete specific objectives, as a team or alone – adding a whole new dimension to the Dungeon and Shadow system in Mabinogi.
Along with the new mission system, comes the inclusion of the new Destiny System. Mabinogi's skill system is currently designed to allow you to become (essentially) whatever you want, however you want. Sometimes players would like to have a system where they can choose a path and follow it. The design team has done just that. If you choose the Destiny system, new skills will be available to you without removing your current skill set. Rather the Destiny skills will enhance certain abilities, allowing you to fulfill a specific combat role.
To top all of this off, there will be updates to skills, Shadow Missions and an item upgrade system. Needless to say, the players of Mabinogi will see some dramatic changes coming to the game with this new update.
